How to Recover and Share Captured Files from an Insta360 Camera

This guide explains how to:

  • Connect your Insta360 camera to a laptop

  • Identify and recover captured files

  • Upload and share them via OneDrive

Connect the Insta360 Camera to Your Laptop

Option A: Direct USB Connection (Recommended)

  • Power OFF the camera.

  • Connect it to your laptop using the original USB cable.

  • Power ON the camera.

  • Select “USB Mode” → “File Transfer / U-Disk Mode.”

  • The camera will appear as a removable drive.

Option B: Using the SD Card

  • Power OFF the camera.

  • Remove the microSD card.

  • Insert it into your laptop using a card reader.

  • The SD card will appear as a removable drive.

Identify the Captured Files

  • Open File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac).

  • Open the camera drive or SD card.

  • Navigate to the folder:

DCIM

Inside DCIM, you may see folders such as:

  • Camera01

  • 100MEDIA

  • Insta360

  • Or similar

Understanding File Naming Format (Very Important)

Insta360 files are often automatically named using a date-based format such as:

20260101_123456.insv

This format represents:

  • 2026 → Year

  • 01 → Month

  • 01 → Date

So: -

20260101 = 1st January 2026

This helps you easily identify captures taken on specific dates.

If the client is looking for captures from a particular day, they should:

  • Sort files by Name or Date Modified

  • Look for files starting with the required date (YYYYMMDD format)

  • Select only those specific files for sharing

If Files/Captures Are Not Visible

  • Ensure the SD card is properly inserted.

  • Check if storage space is being used.

  • Enable “Show Hidden Files.”

  • Try a different USB cable or card reader.

  • Test on another computer.

If storage is used but files are missing, do NOT format the SD card. Contact support immediately.

Copy Files to Your Laptop

  • Select the required files (based on date if needed).

  • Right-click → Copy.

  • Paste into a new folder on your desktop (e.g., “Insta360 Captures – Jan 01 2026”).

Always copy files first before editing or uploading.

Upload Files to OneDrive

Option A: Via Web Browser

  • Log in with your Microsoft account.

  • Click Upload → Select Files or Folder.

  • Choose the copied folder (preferably organized by date).

  • Wait until upload completes.

Option B: Using OneDrive Desktop App

  • Open your OneDrive folder on your laptop.

  • Drag and drop the Insta360 folder into it.

  • Wait for the green check mark indicating sync completion.

Share Only Specific Date Captures

If the client requires captures from specific dates:

  • Filter files by date (YYYYMMDD format).

  • Create a separate folder for that date.

  • Upload only that folder to OneDrive.

  • Click Share → Copy Link.

  • Send the shareable link.

This ensures only relevant captures are shared, avoiding large unnecessary uploads.

Best Practices

  • Do NOT rename original camera files.

  • Do NOT format the SD card unless confirmed.

  • Always maintain a local backup.

  • Share files organized by capture date for easier identification.
